Part Two: The Church and Homosexuality
This study guide has now been sent to all rostered leaders in hard copy and is now available on this website to be downloaded and reproduced if desired. Hard copies may also be reproduced or additional copies may be ordered according to the directions printed in the study guide.
The Task Force for ELCA Studies on Sexuality has worked hard to make sure that this booklet presents an accurate and fair picture of the different viewpoints being voiced in our church regarding the blessing of gay and lesbian unions and the ordaining, commissioning, or consecrating of persons in such committed unions.
The task force has received a large volume of correspondence, publications, proceedings of conferences, videos, and other materials related to the subject before us. We have listened carefully to these communications. They have helped us shape the study guide. In keeping with the mandate of the 2001 Churchwide Assembly that called for this study, we are now turning our attention to the upcoming responses of those who will have engaged in the study process. These responses will be our primary source for understanding the mind of this church. As we study along with you in our task force activities, we will be listening carefully to your input. This is your opportunity to shape the future decisions of this church.
Every individual in the discussion can submit his or her own response form (by November 1, 2004). (See also How will your response form be used?) We realize that we can’t think of everything, so the form provides an opportunity for you to present concerns or facts that you think are important but missing.
In the booklet there are some ideas for different formats. The six sessions into which the study is divided can be dealt with in whatever time frame is required by local needs and opportunities. Be inventive and design situations that permit those interested in participating to have an opportunity. We also have included some guidance for the conduct of a sensitive and respectful dialogue.
We pray that the Spirit will lead us on this journey by the light of the Word to a faithful conclusion.
