ELCA Northern Illinois Synod Workshops Encourage "Green Living"

The Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) Northern Illinois Synod (NIS) is offering workshops as part of its efforts with Lutheran Outdoor Ministries Center (LOMC), Oregon, Illinois, to form a Green Team and raise environmental awareness in its congregations. Congregation Receives $12,000 Grant

Mountain View Lutheran Church, Edgewood, Wash., an ELCA congregation, was one of six Christian churches awarded "Cultures of Call" grants from the Fund for Theological Education (FTE), Atlanta. Mountain View received $12,000 for its initiative, "Called by Name: Vocation and God's Sense of Call," which is comprised of a children, youth and family ministry; annual congregation retreats; and an educational center for pastors and lay leaders.

525 Years – 525 Baptisms!

Nearly 525 years ago, on Nov. 11, 1583, Martin Luther was baptized in the St. Petri Church in Eisleben, Germany. To mark this occasion, the pastors of St. Petri-Pauli are hoping to baptize 525 people on Nov.11, 2008. The Rev. Claudia D. Bergmann and the Rev. Scott A. Moore, ELCA pastors serving in Germany, are ready for the challenge.

The Moravian Star

Practical Aspect of Full Communion

The Moravian Church in North America is a full communion partner of the ELCA. Full communion is a deep, theological relationship expressing a mutual respect for the ministries of both churches. A practical extension of that bond came in the form of a loan the ELCA Mission Investment Fund provided the Moravian Church Northern Province. The money refinanced a loan the Moravians used to buy a residential building adjacent to their provincial office in Bethlehem, Pa.

Pinwheels for Peace

School advocates for peace through art

Each year, 200 Pinwheels for Peace are planted at Leif Ericson Day School in Brooklyn, New York, accompanied by student musicians and singers. The school shares worship and activities centered around recognition of the United Nations International Day of Peace with their Brooklyn neighbors.
